SUPERBOY'S LEGION #1 (DC COMICS)

WRITTEN BY MARK FARMER

ILLUSTRATED BY ALAN DAVIS AND MARK FARMER

An Esleworld title that hearkens back to the original incarnation of the
Legion of Super-Heroes - the difference being that Superboy exists in the 30th century,
rather than being a time traveller. Writer Farmer compresses so much story content
into this first issue, it's almost bursting at the seams and threatens to implode under the strain.

The Davis-Farmer artwork is as usual, pure eye candy and it's been a long time since the
Legionnaires have looked this good. The nagging suspicion that Farmer is trying to
achieve too much too soon is mitigated by the little nuances and touches that
Legion fans will pick up and enjoy. That said, it's hard to see the long term impact of this comic.

Readers new to the Legion will find that the mainstream title is completely different and
so conversions will be few. Still, a fun ride while it lasts.

BOTTOM LINE: FOR LEGION FANS ONLY.

RATING: 80%

DOUBLE IMAGE #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

WRITTEN BY LARRY YOUNG/JOE CASEY

ILLUSTRATED BY JOHN HEEBINK/CHARLES EDLARD

Two continuing comic stories in one. Not seen since the days of Strange Tales
et al. In this case, Codeflesh - a super-hero bounty hunter and The Bod - a
lady with strange physical abilities. With the track records of the writers involved,
it's sad to report that both stories are duds. Waste of trees.

BOTTOM LINE: IGNORE AT ALL COST!

RATING: 25%

AVENGERS FOREVER TP (MARVEL)

WRITTEN BY KURT BUSIEK & ROGER STERN

ILLUSTRATED BY CARLOS PACHEO

A classic super-hero epic in the grand Avengers tradition. Read in one go,
it really leaves a deep impression. Either you will balk at the voluminous detail of
Avengers history the writers have based the story on or marvel and wonder at the
awe-inspiring grandeur that only a super-hero comic can sometimes evoke.

BOTTOM LINE: PURE SUPER-HEROIC FICTION AT ITS BEST

RATING: 76%

ORION#11

WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED BY WALT SIMONSON

The final showdown with Desaad and an unexpected twist on how we arrived
at this point in time to begin with! Simonson's art has never looked better.
With machinations going on New Genesis and Orion getting meaner and more powerful
with each issue, an intriguing conflict is brewing between New Genesis and the 'new' Apokolips.

BOTTOM LINE: The New Gods have not been this good since Kirby!

RATING: 76%
